First, the US government and now UK banned Huawei from the 5G market, which means that all the equipment from the Chinese company must be removed from UK by 2027.
Also, operators will not have the possibility to buy 5G equipment from Huawei, by the end of 2020.
Using the arguments as the US government, the Culture Secretary, Oliver Dowden, said “This has not been an easy decision, but it is the right one for the UK telecoms networks, for our national security and our economy, both now and indeed in the long run,” . With this decision, Dowden also confirms that UK’s 5G rollout, will suffer a delay of at least, 1 year.
Vodafone and BT warned of the cost of removing Huawei equipment and that it also will cause huge delays and monetary costs of billion pounds.
Uk banned Huawei but the real consequences will be felt by operators, that one more time this year will be forced to rethink their strategy about 5G rollout. Although the great majority of the operators being already reducing the connection with Huawei, nothing predicted the extreme news that will now cause huge delays in the next months.
What the alternatives to Huawei in UK?
Without Huawei, UK must find the alternatives to the Chinese company, that will no longer supply to the market.
Ericsson has taken a step forward and Arun Bansal, Ericsson’s President of Europe and Latin America, told that the company “(…) has the technology, experience and supply chain capacity to help accomplish this, and we stand ready to work with the UK operators to meet their timetable, with no disruption to customers.”
“While, there are other network vendors who could pick up the pieces, it is unclear whether they are up to the task. Established rivals like Ericsson and Nokia have been struggling and there’s a resurgence of players like Samsung Networks and Japanese players Fujitsu and NEC. Smaller, fast growing and niche solution providers like Mavenir will all be keen to secure new business,” said PP Foresight’s Pablo Pescatore. Source: Total Telecom
